Monticiano

Monticiano is a small town of about 1500 inhabitants not more than 22 miles from Siena (Tuscany).  The town is stretched out on a  hill  365 meters high, between two valleys. Its origins are unknown, but very ancient. The town and the territory belonged to Volterra and to the Sienese republic in the Middle ages. The ancient castle on top of the town has been destroyed during the 2nd world war, but the stone walls are still visible. Among the defensive works the walls and a couple of towers still exist. The Porta Maremmana (Gate) is well preserved. A beautiful Romanesque church in marble stone dominates the main piazza. Next to the church is a nice cloister and a little museum of sacred art preserving very fine art works.

The landscape is mainly hilly and the most important mountain is 647 meters high. The area is rich in chestnut woods, oaks, pine trees and maquis. Thanks to its location Monticiano can be considered a real nature paradise, with mild climate, even in hot summers. The great extension of woods allow to have pure and healthy air, the high value of its natural beauties and the pleasant scenery make it a special place to stay where you can have a nice vacation and a complete relaxation.
